Rupita Chakraborty
Rupita Chakraborty's practice focuses on white collar defense and complex commercial litigation. She is a founding member of the firm's Women's Initiative Committee.
Rupita joined Friedman Kaplan from Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP, where she focused on complex commercial and investigatory matters and enjoyed a robust pro bono practice. She previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable Nina Gershon of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. While pursuing her law degree, she participated in the Federal Defender and Office of the Appellate Defender clinics at New York University School of Law. Rupita is a Fulbright recipient, serving as an English Teaching Assistant in Indonesia after college.
Representative Matters
- Member of Friedman Kaplan defense team that represented the former Chief Financial Officer of Archegos Capital Management in a prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, including through a 2024 nine-week criminal trial involving charges of RICO conspiracy, securities fraud, and mail and wire fraud relating to the 2021 collapse of the family office. In related civil actions, Rupita previously helped the firm obtain the dismissal of a CFTC enforcement action filed in the SDNY and continues to assist in representation of the client in a related SEC enforcement action and in a case brought by a former Archegos employee.
- Representation of a pharmaceutical company in connection with an investigation by the New York State Department of Financial Services.
- Representation of legal scholars and law professors as amici in federal and state lawsuits, including before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, to advance an interpretation of federal law that preserves the authority of states to enact and enforce laws that impose liability on gun industry participants for the sale and marketing of firearms.
Outside the Office
Rupita is a member of the Women's White Collar Defense Association. In 2023, she was selected to the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity's Pathfinders program.
